Sioux (Lakota and Dakota)
"Sioux" is the older English name for the peoples of the Oceti Sakowin, the Seven Council Fires: the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota. These stories were written down at Standing Rock, where Lakota and Dakota live side by side, and Rabbit is often their hero.
The Lakota nations of South Dakota alone count about 120,000 enrolled members, at Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Cheyenne River, Standing Rock and Lower Brule (SD News Watch, 2026).
