Dakota

The Dakota are the eastern peoples of the Oceti Sakowin, the Seven Council Fires, whose lands stretched across the woodlands and prairies of present-day Minnesota and the Dakotas. The writer Zitkala-Ša, who set down this story in 1901, was herself Yankton Dakota.

Today more than forty thousand people are enrolled in Dakota nations in Minnesota, the Dakotas and Nebraska, with several thousand more in Dakota First Nations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan (tribal and state figures, gathered for our film outros).
